How it works

How Does Nervelin Work?

Nervelin releases nine botanical and nutrient ingredients from a gelatin capsule, and each one is absorbed on its own terms rather than as a single mechanism.

Their research files sit in glucose handling, hormones and body weight. The panel gives one total of 1000mg rather than nine amounts, so no route can be quantified from the label itself.

From the glass to the bloodstream

What happens to a Nervelin capsule after you swallow it?

The first twenty minutes, described physically rather than promised.

A single Nervelin bottle, front label, 60 capsules

Two gelatin shells reach the stomach within a minute of the water they went down with. Gelatin is collagen, and stomach acid and warmth open it in something between five and twenty minutes, at which point a gram of powder is released into whatever else is in there.

From that point the nine ingredients stop travelling together. An amino acid is absorbed through transporters built for amino acids. Acetic acid behaves as an acid. A botanical extract is a mixture of dozens of compounds, each with its own solubility, its own absorption and its own fate in the liver, and a meal alongside changes all three.

That is the first reason this page cannot promise a mechanism. The second is on the panel: one total covers all nine, so even a perfect account of how an ingredient behaves would be an account of an unknown quantity of it.

Reading the table across rather than down is the point. The claims are about support for normal function, which is the only kind of claim a dietary supplement may make, and support for normal function is a much weaker statement than an effect on a symptom.

What the middle column does establish is that this is not a random list. Three rows have a glucose literature, two have a hormonal one, and glucose and hormones are both plausibly adjacent to the sensations people buy a nerve supplement for. Adjacent is not the same as demonstrated, and the difference is this page’s whole subject.

Blends and combinations

Does the Nervelin blend act as one thing or as nine?

What it would take for nine ingredients to be a formula rather than a list.

Blends are usually sold on the idea that the parts work together, and it is worth being precise about what that would take. Two ingredients act together when the pair has been tested as a pair and produced something neither produced alone. Anything short of that is a list of ingredients sharing a capsule.

Nothing on this panel has been tested as a combination. Each of the nine has its own file, in its own condition, usually at an amount larger than the whole blend. The single-ingredient work is real and it is cited throughout this site. The combination work does not exist for this particular nine, and no manufacturer in this category would be expected to have run it.

So the sensible way to read the panel is as nine separate entries rather than as one mechanism with nine parts. That reading is less flattering and it is also the one that survives contact with the citations.

What a combination claim would need
  • A trial of this pairing, at these amounts, rather than of each ingredient separately.
  • An outcome measured in people, against a control group taking one ingredient or none.
  • A per-ingredient amount on the label, so the tested combination and the sold combination could be shown to be the same thing.

What would a nerve actually need, and does Nervelin supply it?

Four mechanisms, the compound tested against each, and the dose that trial used.

Peripheral nerves fail in a small number of documented ways, and the research that has tested supplements against those mechanisms is specific about both the compound and the amount.

Oxidative stress in the nerve

The mechanism alpha-lipoic acid was tested against. SYDNEY 2 compared 600, 1,200 and 1,800 mg once daily over five weeks and settled on 600 mg as the best balance of effect and tolerability; NATHAN 1 ran 600 mg once daily for four years, and the pooled analysis weighs the set. That compound is not on this panel.

Glucose damage to the nerve over years

The mechanism behind the single largest cause of peripheral neuropathy, and the reason the American Diabetes Association position statement puts glucose control ahead of everything else. Three rows on this panel have a glucose literature, at amounts of grams a day rather than a share of one gram.

A vitamin the nerve needs and has run short of

B12 depletion is measurable and correctable. A systematic review in metformin users, a review of the mechanism and the Diabetes Prevention Program follow-up describe how common it is. Replacement is a clinical decision made on a blood test rather than a supplement chosen off a shelf, and B12 is not on this label.

Thiamine chemistry inside the nerve

Benfotiamine is a fat-soluble thiamine derivative, and the BENDIP trial gave 300 or 600 mg a day for six weeks. Acetyl-L-carnitine trials ran 500 or 1,000 mg three times daily for a year, a 355-day study used 2,000 mg a day, another paired it with methylcobalamin, and the Cochrane review weighs rather than cheers that record. None of those is on this label either.

Why this section is on a page selling the product

Because a buyer deciding between this capsule and something else deserves the list. Four things have been trialled properly against a nerve endpoint. Knowing their names and their doses is useful whatever anyone decides about this bottle, and the 2022 American Academy of Neurology guideline is where the treatment side of that conversation is written down.

Why a blend total limits what can be said about how Nervelin works

Why a single total makes a mechanism claim unprovable, stated once.

Mechanism talk needs a quantity. An ingredient that does something at two grams a day may do nothing detectable at fifty milligrams, and the same molecule is being described in both sentences.

This panel prints 1000mg for nine ingredients. Split evenly that is about 111 mg each, and nothing requires it to be split evenly. The ordering rule says L-lysine is the heaviest and raspberry ketones the lightest, and stops there.

What changes the way Nervelin behaves in one person and not another?

Four variables, none of them on the label, all of them larger than the differences between capsules.

The meal it lands in

Fat in a meal helps fat-soluble plant compounds across the gut wall and slows everything down on the way. A serving taken with breakfast and a serving taken on an empty stomach are not the same exposure, which is one reason a fixed routine matters more than the hour it happens at.

The gut it lands in

Plant glycosides are frequently cut by gut bacteria before anything is absorbed, and those bacteria vary between people far more than the capsules do. Icariin is a glycoside of exactly that kind, which is part of why the mechanistic literature on it is easier to read than a human dose would be.

The liver it passes through

Almost everything swallowed is processed by the liver before it reaches general circulation, and that processing varies with genetics, age, alcohol and other medicines. It is also the reason the Garcinia row carries the caution it does.

Everything else happening that month

Sleep, alcohol, blood sugar control and how much walking a week involved all move the same sensations this category is sold for. A self-test that does not record them will credit the capsule with whatever the month did.

How long does a capsule take to dissolve?

A gelatin shell typically opens in five to twenty minutes in the stomach. That is the shell rather than the contents: absorption of the powder inside runs over hours and varies with the ingredient and the meal around it.

Does it repair nerves?

No, and no dietary supplement may claim to. The three lines on the front are structure and function statements about supporting normal comfort, nerve protection and circulation.

Which ingredient does the most work?

Nothing on the label answers that. Descending order by weight makes L-lysine the heaviest row, which is a statement about mass rather than about activity.

What has been trialled for nerve symptoms?

Alpha-lipoic acid at 600 mg once daily, benfotiamine at 300 to 600 mg a day, acetyl-L-carnitine at 1,500 to 3,000 mg a day, and B12 replacement where a blood test shows depletion. None of the four is on this panel.

Does food change how it works?

Food slows gastric emptying and supplies fat, which helps some plant compounds and hinders others. Practically, food mostly reduces the mild stomach discomfort two capsules can cause on an empty one.
